When installing a timing gear cover, it is important that it be carefully centered to avoid possible damage to the oil seal in the crankshaft opening when the harmonic balancer is installed. Covers installed off center will generally produce an oil leak at the seal. The use of this centering gauge will properly center the cover and oil seal on the harmonic balancer hub in the timing gear cover. First, bolt cover in place with screws loosened to permit shifting of the cover. Spread a coating of grease around the inside surface of the leather seal to help prevent damage to the seal during the balancer replacement operation. Slip the centering gauge on the end of the crankshaft and push forward through the oil seal so that the cover centers itself. When in place, the centering gauge guides and holds the cover in its correct position. Draw cover bolts tight and assemble harmonic balancer in place. The straddle mounted rear pinion bearing used in the 1 1/2 ton trucks is held in place by a heavy split lock ring. This special tool makes the ordinarily difficult installation of this ring easy and helps prevent injury to the mechanic. Slip the lock ring on the small end of the tapered plug and center the plug in the pinion shaft. A small milled slot in the gear permits the pointed nose of pliers to be inserted and fitted in the cone retainer spring gap. Very little pressure is required on plier handles to open the spring, but care is required in fitting end of pliers into spring gap for the spreading operation. At the outer end of the torque tube is a propeller shaft bushing. This tool is designed to replace the bushing to the correct depth in the tube without damage. The tool is made hollow to telescope over the end of the propeller shaft, and provides a safe way to replace the bushing and oil seal in the propeller shaft housing. This tool is designed for pressing the camshaft gear off the camshaft without damage. The tool provides complete support and prevents damage when the gear is removed. Proper replacement of new water pump bushings, packing and oil reservoir is assured by using this set of tools. They perform the work quickly, accurately and without damage to parts.

After the old front and rear bushings have been removed with a T120-2 Bushing Puller, fit a new front bushing on Driver (J-974-1) and install the Driver Pilot Bushing (J-974-2) in the rear bushing hole of the pump. Press the front bushing in place under an arbor press. Driver Pilot Bushing (J-974-2) assures perfect alignment of the Driver (J-974-1) as it presses in the bushing, and sizes it as well.

Remove Packing Installing Sleeve (J-974-3) and install one spring seat with the open "V" shaped side towards the packing. Install the packing spring and assemble the other spring seat with the open "V" shaped side towards the rear. Again insert the Packing Installing Sleeve (J-974-3) in the rear bushing hole and install four packing rings with the grooved side towards the rear and press in place with the Packing Driver (J-974-4).

  J-974-A Water Pump Service Tool Set

To replace the rear bushing, place the new bushing on the Driver (J-974-1) with the flat end against the driver head and pilot the driver into the front bushing and press the rear bushing in place, flush with the housing. Now place the Oil Reservoir on the end of the pump housing and use Replacer (J-974-A1) under an arbor press and force the reservoir tight in place.

The Spacer (J-974-A4) included with these tools is used in Driver (J-974-A1) when replacing the Reservoir on 1937 models. The long Reservoir on 1938 models does not require the use of the spacer. The straddle mounted rear pinion bearing used in the 1 1/2 ton truck is held in place by a heavy split lock ring. This special tool makes the ordinarily difficult installation of this ring easy and helps prevent injury to the mechanic. Slip the lock ring on the small end of the tapered plug and center the plug in the pinion shaft.   Propeller Shaft Bearing Puller
The intermediate propeller shaft support bearing is sealed and permanently lubricated, therefore the inner race is inaccessible. The bearing is also equipped with a dust shield that cannot be removed until the bearing is free of the shaft. This tool grips the bearing around the circumference of the outer race and has enough area to prevent the bearing from misaligning with the shaft. The steady pressure of the puller screw prevents damage to the bearing during removal.
